Kaua’i  Top 5 Beaches

Ke’e Beach -- This beach became popular because of  the mini-series “Thorn Birds” and is a great spot to swim and snorkel.  Visitors who hike the Na Pali Coast often take a dip at Ke’e before leaving.  Just follow Hwy 56 north until you reach the end of the road.

Hanalei Bay Pavilion – Here is the large, white sand beach area near the Hanalei River.  In the summer months, kayaking up the river and in the bay is popular along with surfing, canoeing, boogie boarding, and countless other sports. Follow Hwy. 56 North over the Hanalei Bridge.  Turn right on Aku Road just before Zelo’s Restaurant.  At the end of the road, turn right on Weke Road.  On your left, is the Hanalei Pavilion, and just past the Pavilion is the Hanalei Pier and Blackpot Beach (Great for kids).

‘Anini Beach – This beach is great for having picnics, snorkeling, enjoying a variety of sports, including polo (during the season), windsurfing, and other great beach activities.  To get to‘Anini, head toward Kilauea on Hwy. 56 and turn left on Kalihiwai Road (don’t pass the large concrete bridge).  Head down the road and, when you come to a fork, continue left.  Drive 2 miles to the public campgrounds.  Stay within the reef and watch the currents.  Most beaches on the north shore are safest in the summer months.

Lydgate Park -- This is an excellent spot for families.  There are two park areas equipped with playgrounds, swings, pavilions, barbeque structures, and fields right next to a great kids’ beach.  There is a large section of ocean blocked off by rocks, making it safe for young children.  Take Hwy. 56 toward Lihue and, just past the Wailua River, turn left at the Sun Spree Hotel and follow the signs to Lydgate.

Poipu Beach Park – This beach also has pavilions, barbequing stations, and play-areas for kids.  This beach is often ranked #1 in the state of Hawaii.  The snorkeling to the right of the cove is the best.

Waterfalls of Kauai

Hanakapi’ai Falls -- Drive north on Hwy. 56 until the road ends in Ha’ena State Park.  There you’ll find the head of the Kalalau Trail on your left.  Follow the trail for two miles to the Hanakapi’ai Stream.  The signs will direct you to the falls.  From the stream crossing, it is another 2 miles up the valley to the falls.  It is 8 miles round trip, and fairly vigorous, so bring plenty of water and something to eat.  This is a strenuous and beautiful 6-hour hike.

Ho’opi’i Falls – Take Hwy. 56 south to Kealia Beach.  Turn right onto Kawaihau Road at mile marker 9.  Drive approximately 3 miles and just before Ka’apuna Road (on the left) take a hard right on Kapihi Road and follow it until you see a public dirt road on your left.  This trail will take you past a large unnamed waterfall on your left.  Continue to hike along the stream and, where the stream turns left, cross over.  If it is too deep, don’t attempt it.  Proceed with caution down to the falls.  This is a two-hour moderate hike.

Secret Falls – Getting to these falls is almost exclusively by kayak.  You can rent the kayaks at many different locations, or I could arrange it for you.  Take Hwy. 56 south until it intersects with Hwy. 580.  This is where the Wailua River passes under a bridge and into the ocean.  You can launch your kayaks at the State Park and head up the river.  When you reach a fork, stay right, bank your kayaks, and tie them tightly. You will find a trail that runs along the river.  You will reach Secret Falls in approximately 45 minutes to an hour.

Opeaka’a Falls – Take Hwy. 56 south past Kapa’a and turn left on Kuamo’o (Hwy. 580) in Wailua.  It is a short uphill drive of 1.5miles.  Take the turn-off on your left.  These falls were used in the movie “Blue Hawaii.” (No hiking to this one.)

Wailua Falls – Take Hwy. 56 south and turn right through Hanama’ulu to Hwy. 583 (Ma’alo Road.)  Follow this road 6 miles to the Wailua Falls.  These falls were made famous by “Fantasy Island.”  (No hiking to this one.)

Kipu Falls – Head south on Hwy. 56 just past Lihu’e and then go on Hwy. 50 to the 3-mile marker.  Turn left on Kipu Road.  Then take your first right on Kipu Road until you see a small dirt trail on the left side of the road.  Follow the trail for 5-10 minutes, and you will see a turn off on the right.  These falls were in “Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Arc.” Be careful.  It can be very slippery.  Proceed to the falls with caution and do not attempt to swim if the water is rushing too fast.

Waipo’o Falls – Head up to the Waimea Canyon and park by mile markers 14 or 15.  There is a trail with several look-outs for Waipo’o Falls.  This trail is a 3-hour moderate hike.
