Legend:
13th Century, from Greek word amethystos, meaning “remedy against drunkenness”. The presence of manganese in clear quartz produces Amethyst, while the amount of iron content varies the strength of the purple coloration. The Romans believed this stone prevented drunkenness and used to drink out of amethyst-encrusted goblets. Amethhyst is thought to bestow stability, strength and peace, to relieve stress, and to calm passion, emotional violence and anger. Amethyst is the birthstone for February, symbolizing sincerity, and the zodiac gem for Pisces.
Geology:
The amethyst geodes of Rio Grande do Sul are found within the gas bubbles of vast basalt lava flows of the Serra Grande Formation. This formation is a vast volcanic sequence starting with the basalt extrusion and sequentially evolving to acid volcanics. This occurred in the late Jurassic and early Cretaceous, 150-130 million years.
Water associated with the lava and super heated causes the leaching of silica, iron manganese and other elements into solution. As the lava cools, the hydrothermal solutions migrate in fissures and cracks finding the tubes and vugs to eventually precipitate the amethyst quartz. With further cooling other minerals crystalize such as zeolites, calcite, and selenite. The colorization of amethyst is most likely due to ferric iron.
History of this Stone:
Mined in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Located in Smithsonian Institute prior to arriving at Halemana.

Legend:
The pink colour is created by the inclusion of manganese and sometimes titanium in the quartz rock. The early Chinese used Rose Quartz for cairns of the Goddess of Peace as the color reflects her gentleness and wisdom. Rose quartz is said to produce a calming, cooling energy that will restore calmness, balance and clarity to the emotions, and is considered excellent for healing emotional wounds.
Geology:
Between 600 to 480 million years ago, before the dinosaurs, before the rearrangement of the continents, our fair planet was in a very active, dynamic time. Many important mineral and crystal deposits are associated with this time. These giant crystals formed at great depth (10 to 20 km deep). The hydrothermal solutions, silica in solution with water, must have been abundant at that location on the planet. Imagine a rich zone of hot energetic fluid segregating and flowing in the crust. Imagine light in the dark! It eventually froze, precipitated, into vast zones of quartz crystals and quartz veins. Eons of time and earth history pass as the layers of earth are gently worn down bringing the hidden crystals closer and closer to the surface by erosion.
History of this Stone:
Mined in Brazil.
The story of the rose quartz’s journey to Kauai:
In 1999, a man named Bahiano, short, round, balding head, brown skin, with a friendly twinkle in his eye, was getting ready to retire as a crystal miner and dealer. He had been involved with crystal since the 1940's and in his 70's was ready to slow down. On his last excursion to look at a potential new deposit, he traveled over 1,500 km to the southern Amazon basin. He decided to put a crew on a healthy looking prospect and go for it.
In excavating along the quartz seam going down about 12 meters they encountered a crystal face that grew in dimension as they cleared away the clay soil. They uncovered a portion of giant quartz that was beyond their humble means to get it out. Bahiano returned to his home and contacted a friend who was also a crystal miner and formed a partnership to mine the crystals. With more resources and a D9 CAT they began to recover the giant crystals for the next two years. Many crystals were between 2 and 20 tons.
As that pit ended production a new pit was started nearby on the strike and more giant crystal were recovered. This time, they were smaller in dimension overall but had more clarity. It is from this pit that 14 crystals emerged and were brought to The Crystal Image in Laguna Beach. The owners of Hale Mana purchased two giant rose quartzes that now reside at Hale Mana. |
